Flooring Options & Costs for Indian Homes: Tiles, Vitrified, Marble & Wood

Flooring is one of the biggest interior decisions you'll make. Here's how the main options compare on cost, durability and maintenance for an Indian home.

By Urban Groups ·

The main options at a glance

Vitrified tiles are the default for most Indian homes — durable, low-maintenance and available in finishes that mimic marble or wood, usually the most cost-effective choice. Ceramic tiles are cheaper still and common in bathrooms and utility areas.

Natural marble and granite sit at the premium end: beautiful and long-lasting, but costlier to buy and lay, and marble needs more care. Engineered or laminate wood brings warmth to bedrooms but demands the most maintenance and doesn't love standing water.

Rough cost ranges

As an indicative guide, ceramic and entry vitrified tiles are the most economical per sq ft, mid-range vitrified and quality granite sit in the middle, and premium imported marble and good engineered wood are the most expensive — often several times the cost of basic tiling once laying and material are combined.

Laying cost, skirting, wastage and the subfloor all add to the material price, so always compare fully-laid rates rather than tile price alone.

Choosing by room

A practical approach: vitrified tiles through living and common areas, anti-skid ceramic in bathrooms and balconies, and warmer wood or wood-look finishes in bedrooms. Marble makes a strong statement in entrances and living rooms if the budget allows.
